 FAQs

  • Water birth is the process of giving birth in a tub of warm water. Some women choose to labor in the water and get out for delivery. Other women decide to stay in the water for the delivery as well. The theory behind water birth is that since the baby has already been in the amniotic fluid sac for nine months, birthing in a similar environment is gentler for the baby and less stressful for the mother.

    • Less pain and higher satisfaction with the birth experience

    • Less medication use for pain relief—this may be important for people who want or need to avoid epidurals or narcotic medications during labor

    • Less use of artificial oxytocin and possibly shorter labor

    • Higher rates of normal vaginal birth

    • Lower rates of episiotomy

    • Higher rates of an intact perineum, especially in high-episiotomy settings

    • Possibly lower rates of severe tears (3rd or 4th degree), especially in high-episiotomy settings

    • Possibly lower rates of postpartum hemorrhage

Reported benefits of water labor and waterbirth as listed on evidencebasedbirth.com

    • We need more research evidence on waterbirth, so this makes it more difficult to make a truly informed choice.

    • There may be a higher rate of mild labial tears from waterbirth in low-episiotomy environments such as homes and birth centers

    • Umbilical cord snap is a rare but possible occurrence. Care providers need to take care not to place too much traction on the cord when guiding the infant out of the water and identify the source of any bleeding immediately.

    • There have been several case reports of water aspiration. These cases have not been observed in prospective research since 1999, and almost all of the infants in the case report made a complete recovery.

    • Although large research studies have not shown any increase in the risk of infection, there have been several case reports of infections after waterbirths. This risk can be lowered by using pools that are easy to disinfect, filling tubs closer to the time of the birth, and regularly testing the hospital water supply, hoses, and birthing pools.

  • The rental includes a non-refundable booking fee, 4 week time period, the birth pool, a disposable pool liner, an air pump with the birth pool in a box, a water pump for emptying, a floating thermometer, 1 sink adapter & debris net. A drinking water hose may be purchased through me or you may pick one up on your own.

Please note hose connectors may not work for every sink. Please keep this in mind when preparing for the birth.

  • The included rental period is 4 weeks of your choosing. (Typically weeks 38-42, or 37-41).

Any additional weeks can be purchased for an additional $50 per week.

  • If you are a birth client of Cu’Yara Birthing Services we will be happy to bring the pool with us to your final prenatal meeting (appx 36 - 37 weeks) and take it home during the postpartum visit. If you are not a client pick-up and returns can be taken place at the home office located in Bloomfield, NJ.

Optionally delivery and pick-up services may be purchased separately.

  • The security deposit is equal to the cost of the rental. The deposit will be returned after the pool is received and found to be in the same condition it was rented in. Funds are typically returned within 7 days of the pool is returned. If accessories included with the rental are broken or not returned, the cost of replacement will be deducted from the deposit total.

    • You will need to provide your own hose for filling and emptying the pool. You can purchase one as an add-on. An RV drinking water hose is strongly recommended for filling, as garden hoses can contain lead, BPS, and other toxic contaminates.

    • We provide a sink adapter for filling. There is always a possibility that the adapter does not work with your sink or shower. Make sure to check the adapter BEFORE the start of labor.

    • You will be responsible for setting up the pool, taking it down, and doing basic cleaning of the pool after use before returning.

    • We strongly recommend doing a practice setup of the pool and familiarizing yourself with all accessories before the start of labor.

  • Once you familiarize yourself with the pool you have chosen, the setup should take appx 30-60 minutes, depending mostly on your water pressure. Take-down takes around the same amount of time.

  • Yes! Each pool is thoroughly cleaned and sanitized with hospital-grade cleaning supplies. A disposable liner, which will be provided MUST be used while you are using it.

  • While you do not need to do a thorough sanitizing, please make sure the pool and all components are rinsed, free of large particulates or visible blood/fluids, and that everything is dried before packing it back into the box.

A thorough cleaning and sanitizing will be done once we receive it and will be prepared for the next family.
